"Counselling someone with a personal problem is neither magical nor mystical. Although training and experience in counselling is beneficial, everyone has the potential of helping others by listening and talking through their difficulties. Counselling with an effective outcome can be done with a friend, neighbour, relative, the local barber, hairdresser, banker, and bartender, as well as by social workers, psychiatrist, psychologist, guidance counselors, and the clergy. This is not to say that everyone will be effective at counselling. Professional people, because of their training and experience, have a higher probability of being effective, but competence and rapport, rather than degrees or certificates are the keys to desirable outcomes." (The Practice of Social Work by Charles Zastrow)
